Since writing to you on the 14th, we have received a
duly signed duplicate of Mr.Cheetham's letter (Canton, May 13th)
in which, even at that date, he stated his fear that some
trumped up charge might be contrived against him so that at the
last moment the liquidators could get control of the Texas Oil
business.
This morning we have had the pleasure of receiving the
following telegram from Messrs.Johnson, Stokes & Master in
Hongkong:
"Governor after holding enquiry to-day decided Cheetham
continue agency Hongkong, condition Schluter and Reuters
nothing to do Canton business stop. Shewan to handle
Canton portion coming shipment as temporary arrangement
owing urgency. Have done all possible, this best could
obtain."
We have at once cabled this news to the Texas Company
in New York, and have replied to Mesers.Johnson Stokes & Master
that, while we appreciate the success of their effort, we fear
